Square Enix Defends Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth Sales Amid Changing Industry Landscape

In recent discussions surrounding the performance of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth on PlayStation 5, Square Enix has taken steps to address worries over its sales figures. The company is pushing back against views that consider the game a commercial disappointment. Data from Circana, available until November 2024, indicates that the title achieved notable standings, securing the position of the 15th highest-selling game in the United States, and it stands out as the only exclusive on this chart.
Yoshinori Kitase, a key executive at Square Enix, conveyed a sense of pride regarding the game's sales achievements. He noted that the company feels a strong sense of confidence in the sales performance, remarking positively on reaching significant sales milestones. Nevertheless, he recognized the changing dynamics within the gaming industry, underlining the importance of making the game available on various platforms: "In today's gaming world, exclusivity to one platform is not feasible... we aim to provide this experience to as numerous players as possible."
This viewpoint indicates that future entries in the franchise might lean towards a multi-platform distribution method, potentially extending to systems like PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox, subject to current agreements with Sony. Furthermore, a PC version of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is expected to launch on January 23, 2025.
