Google Lens Revolutionizes Research with New Video Recording Feature Enabled by AI

The recent upgrade to Google Lens introduces an exciting video recording feature that significantly enhances its functionality. This enhancement allows users to create videos about the items or locations they are curious about, facilitating swift online research about them. Initially presented at Google I/O earlier in the year, the feature leverages the advanced capabilities of Google's proprietary AI model, Gemini. However, it is worth noting that this feature may not be accessible in regions lacking the AI-enhanced search experience.

With the newly added capability, users can now record videos directly within the Google Lens application. Previously, Google Lens was limited to image capture, offering utilities like translation and image searches, which could assist with tasks like solving math problems. While these functions were helpful for quick translations of signs or identifying flowers, they fell short when it came to analyzing moving objects or generating detailed inquiries.

For example, users were unable to photograph a table and inquire about the wood type. At Google I/O, the solution was revealed in the form of the short video recording feature. The updated Google Lens allows individuals to record brief videos, approximately 20 seconds long, and accompany them with verbal questions. After the video is captured, Google Lens employs Gemini-driven AI Overviews to search based on the spoken prompt. The AI system processes the visual information and provides insightful feedback.

During tests, the feature successfully identified moving objects, describing their color, shape, and material. Currently, this feature is being rolled out to all Google Lens users in regions where AI Overviews are operational. To use the feature, users simply need to access the Google Lens interface and, while in Search mode, long press the capture icon to begin video recording. They can then articulate what they would like to know about the content of the video.

Once they finish speaking, Google Lens seamlessly opens the Search function within the app, and AI Overviews starts generating responses, typically within a two to three-second timeframe.
