In a riveting fusion of competitive edge and sci-fi allure, the 5v5 PvP title Concord has announced a July beta phase, followed by an official release on August 23, 2024, promising an explosive blend of Overwatch dynamics and the whimsical charm of Guardians of the Galaxy in its latest gameplay footage. Crafted by Firewalk Studios, enriched by talents from the echelons of Activision and Destiny, Concord made a striking exhibition through captivating gameplay and polished cinematic sequences in the PlayStation State of Play event, May 2024, setting the stage for its debut on PS5 and PC.
The teaser kicks off with an impressive four-minute sequence of computer-generated imagery, heavily infused with the essence of Guardians of the Galaxy, transitioning into a succinct showcase of two-minute live gameplay. This sneak peek offers brief insights into the varied missions and head-to-head confrontations that hint at elements reminiscent of popular titles like Valorant and Overwatch. Players can anticipate a roster of Freegunners, each brandishing distinct powers, from formidable tanks to swift snipers. Notably, a character dubbed Star Child conspicuously nods to the Guardians of the Galaxy influence.
Regrettably, the livestream's more intricate discussions on game development were omitted from the official trailer. Among the revelations, Firewalk expounded on how Concord draws inspiration from both combat and strategy games while striving to perfect a balanced first-person shooter format. The game introduces strategic deployable items with potential lasting impacts, from healing pads to impenetrable shields, enriching its tactical depth.
"Embracing our characters' unique asymmetry and maximizing their encounter's creative potential is our core focus," shared Jon Weisnewski, the lead character designer. "This approach allows us to step back and empower players to discover their unique strategies and magic." In parallel news, the developers renowned for their work on Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War divulged about their latest venture, a free-to-play cooperative soulslike game, Ballad of Antara, scheduled for a PS5 release in 2025.
